  5. Guyana

    faq

    Before
Guyana rewards care rather than nerve. Violent and armed robbery is a real risk in parts of Georgetown, so avoid walking after dark, use booked taxis, and keep valuables out of sight. The interior — Kaieteur, Iwokrama, the Rupununi — is very safe from crime but genuinely remote, with limited medical help, so travel with an established operator and insurance that covers evacuation.
    After
The UK government's travel advice says attacks and muggings, sometimes with knives or firearms, occur in broad daylight but are more common at night, and names Stabroek Market, Tiger Bay, Albouystown and Sophia in Georgetown among the areas affected; it recommends taxis from reputable companies booked in advance. Canada's travel advice says travel to the interior is not safe because of low police presence, and the FCDO says medical facilities are very limited, even in Georgetown.

    faq

    Before
Only if you are arriving from, or have spent more than 4 hours transiting through the airport of, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission — then a certificate is required from age 1. Guyana itself is a risk country, so vaccination is recommended for everyone, and you will be asked for the certificate when traveling on to Brazil or Suriname.

Only if you are arriving from, or have spent more than 4 hours transiting through the airport of, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission — then a certificate is required from age 1. Canada's travel advice notes that there is a risk of yellow fever in Guyana itself.
  7. Guyana

    tips

    Before
Carry your yellow fever certificate with your passport. It is checked if you arrive from a risk country, and Brazil, Suriname and several onward destinations ask for it from travelers who have been in Guyana.
    After
Carry your yellow fever certificate with your passport: you must show it if you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, and Canada's travel advice notes there is a risk of yellow fever in Guyana itself.
  8. Guyana

    tips

    Before
Even visa-free visitors are given a specific number of days by the officer at the desk — often 30 rather than the full allowance. Check the stamp before you leave the counter and apply to the Central Immigration and Passport Office in Georgetown if you need longer; overstaying brings fines and delays at departure.
    After
The UK government's travel advice says visitors can normally stay for 30 days and can apply to Guyana's immigration support services for one-month extensions. Overstaying can lead to arrest, a one-year prison sentence, a fine of up to 50,000 Guyana dollars and deportation at your own expense. Canada's travel advice says to make sure your passport is stamped on arrival.
  9. Guyana

    tips

    Before
Kaieteur Falls, the Rupununi and most eco-lodges are reached by small aircraft from Eugene F. Correia (Ogle) airport, not the main international airport. Baggage allowances are strict — often around 20 lb (9 kg) — and flights are weather-dependent, so leave a buffer day before an international connection.

  10. Guyana

    tips

    Before
This is a cash economy. Change US dollars at a licensed cambio (never on the street), take enough Guyanese dollars for the whole interior leg before you fly out of Ogle, and expect to be quoted large numbers — G$1,000 is only a few US dollars.
    After
Canada's travel advice says to carry enough cash for your anticipated expenses, to exchange foreign currency only at banks, hotels and established exchange bureaus (cambios), and that only major hotels accept credit cards. The UK government's travel advice says to go inside the exchange office or shop rather than change money on the street.
  11. Guyana

    tips

    Before
Guyana drives on the left, roads outside the coastal strip are unpaved, and night driving is genuinely dangerous — unlit vehicles, livestock and deep potholes. Hire a driver rather than self-driving if you are heading inland.
    After
Vehicles drive on the left in Guyana. Canada's travel advice says road conditions and road safety are poor throughout the country, roads are poorly lit, and roaming livestock are a hazard; it advises avoiding driving at night.

    customs.notes

    Before
Firearms, ammunition and camouflage-pattern clothing are restricted. Leave them at home. | Gold and raw diamonds cannot simply be carried out: exporting them requires a license from the Guyana Gold Board or the Geology and Mines Commission. | Fresh produce, plants and untreated wildlife products are controlled. Declare anything of the sort rather than risk a fine.
    After
Canada's travel advice says importing or exporting restricted items, including firearms and ammunition, without the proper permits may result in heavy fines and prison sentences. | The UK government's travel advice says there are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Guyana, and that you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

    FAQ

    Before
Guinea is calm across most of the country but politically volatile. A military government has been in power since 2021, and demonstrations in Conakry can turn violent. Most visits are trouble-free with sensible precautions; check your government's travel advice before booking.

    Before
Plan your money before arrival: bring clean euro or dollar notes, change what you need in Conakry, and do not count on ATMs working outside the capital.
    After

  21. Guinea

    Best time to visit

    Before
November to April is the dry season and the practical window for travel. The Fouta Djallon highlands are at their best; the June–October rains make many roads impassable.
    After
Canada's travel advice says the rainy season runs from May to September, when seasonal flooding can make roads impassable.
  22. Guinea

    Payments

    Before
Guinea runs on cash. Cards are accepted only at a handful of Conakry hotels and ATMs are unreliable. Bring euros or US dollars to exchange, and expect to carry large bundles of francs.
    After
The UK government says credit cards are not widely used in Guinea and obtaining hard currency is very difficult; a few ATMs in Conakry accept foreign cards but give only small amounts and are unreliable. Canada's travel advice describes a cash-based economy, and exchanging money on the street is illegal.

    FAQ

    Before
Effectively no. Bring cash — ideally euros, which exchange easily into the euro-pegged CFA franc. Cards work at only a couple of hotels in Bissau and ATMs are few and unreliable.
    After
Effectively no. The UK government says Guinea-Bissau is a cash-based economy where credit cards are rarely used and there are not many ATMs, and Canada says there are no ATMs at all. Bring the cash you need and declare foreign currency on arrival.
  25. Guinea-Bissau

    FAQ

    Before
Day-to-day crime against visitors is low, but the country is politically fragile with a history of coup attempts. Most trips — especially to the Bijagós islands — are trouble-free; avoid demonstrations and check your government's travel advice before booking.
    After
Canada's travel advice says to exercise a high degree of caution because of high crime rates and weak state infrastructure, and that the army seized power on 26 November 2025. Petty crime is common at the airport, in markets and at public gatherings, and demonstrations can turn violent. Check your government's travel advice before booking.
