Bolivia
payments
- Before
- Cash in bolivianos is essential outside La Paz, Santa Cruz and Sucre. Cards work in city hotels and better restaurants, but ATMs run dry in small towns and on the Uyuni circuit; dollar shortages in recent years have also made card and ATM access unreliable, so carry more cash than you think you need.
- After
- Canada's travel advice says credit and debit cards are not widely accepted outside urban centres and recommends carrying small notes for everyday costs such as street food, taxis and tips. It also says Canadian dollars are hard to exchange, so bring US dollars if you need to exchange cash. The UK government says Bolivia is going through an economic crisis and a dollar shortage.

Bhutan
FAQ
- Before
- No — since the 2022–2023 reforms, independent visits are allowed and you can apply for the visa yourself. A licensed guide is still required for treks and for travel beyond the main western valleys, so many visitors find a licensed Bhutanese operator the simplest route.
- After
- You can apply for the visa yourself at immi.gov.bt. But the UK government says you need to use tour guides when visiting places of interest, or you may be refused entry, and Canada's travel advice says you must buy a travel package from an authorised travel agent. Check with the Department of Immigration before planning an independent trip.

Bhutan
Tip
- Before
- To enter dzongs and temples, wear long sleeves and long trousers or a skirt, remove shoes and hats, and photograph only where permitted — never inside shrine rooms.
- After
- Dress respectfully when visiting temples and dzongs (UK government), and ask your guide before taking pictures or filming inside dzongs, temples and monasteries (Canada).
-
Bhutan
Tip
- Before
- Passes on popular routes climb well above 3,000 m and treks go much higher — build in acclimatisation days, and take even the day hike to Tiger's Nest (3,120 m) slowly.
- After
- Australia's Smartraveller says altitude sickness is a risk above 2,500 m, and Canada notes that several trekking trails exceed 5,000 m. Ascend slowly and make sure your insurance covers evacuation from altitude.

Bhutan
Tip
- Before
- Since the 2023 reforms you can explore Thimphu and Paro independently, but a licensed guide is still required for treks and travel beyond the main western valleys. The rules are refined periodically, so check when applying. Most visitors simply book through a licensed Bhutanese operator.
- After
- The UK government says you need to use tour guides when visiting places of interest, or you may be refused entry, and that permits are needed for some areas — your guide can arrange them.
-
Bhutan
Tip
- Before
- Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Paro — one of the world's most demanding airports, where flights are weather-dependent and sell out around festival season. Book flights before anything else and keep a buffer day for connections.

Customs notes
- Before
- Tobacco may be imported only in small quantities for personal use and attracts high duties; smoking is banned in most public places. | Antiques and religious artefacts may not be exported. Buy handicrafts from licensed shops and keep the receipts for customs.
- After
- You can bring a small supply of tobacco for personal use, but the UK government says you must pay taxes and duties on it and be able to show proof of payment if asked; Canada's travel advice puts the tax at 200%. Smoking is prohibited in public places. | It is illegal to take antiques out of Bhutan, and customs officials may inspect items that look like antiques (UK government).

Best time to visit
- Before
- Spring (March–May) brings rhododendron blooms and mild trekking weather; fall (September–November) offers the clearest Himalayan views and the biggest tsechu festivals.
- After
- Canada's travel advice says the monsoon runs from June to September, when landslides are frequent and mountain roads can become impassable. No official source names a best season; the months shown fall outside the monsoon.
