    FAQ answer

    Before
Street crime in Asmara is rare, but the wider picture demands caution: several governments advise against non-essential travel, border zones are militarised with landmine risks, movement is controlled by permits, communications are restricted and consular help is extremely limited. Travel with a reputable operator and follow the rules precisely.
    After
Asmara is a relatively safe city, though there is a risk of street crime at night, but the wider picture demands caution: the UK advises against all travel within 25 km of the land borders, where there are landmines, movement outside the Asmara region needs a permit, international SIM cards do not work, and consular help is severely limited. Travel with a reputable operator and follow the rules precisely.
  13. Eritrea

    safety text

    Before
Day-to-day street crime in Asmara is low, but Eritrea is a tightly controlled state where several governments advise heightened caution or against non-essential travel: movement outside the capital requires permits, border areas with Ethiopia and Djibouti are militarised with landmine risks, communications are restricted and consular assistance is extremely limited.
    After
Asmara is a relatively safe city, though there is a risk of street crime, especially at night. The UK advises against all travel within 25 km of Eritrea's land borders, where there are landmines; foreign nationals need a permit to travel outside the Asmara region, and consular assistance is severely limited.

    Safety

    Before
Violent crime is comparatively rare, but travelers face frequent police checkpoints, document checks and occasional petty extortion; photography rules are strictly enforced. Carry certified copies of your passport and visa at all times.
    After
Crime ranges from petty theft and mugging to carjacking and armed robbery, with greater risk after dark in remote parts of Malabo and Bata. Police and military roadblocks are common, with regular reports of requests for bribes, and photographing government or military buildings or airports is illegal. Always carry your passport or residence permit, or copies.
  20. Equatorial Guinea

    FAQ: is it safe

    Before
Broadly yes in terms of crime, which is low by regional standards. The friction points are bureaucratic: frequent police checkpoints, strict photography rules and document checks. Keep your papers on you, avoid photographing anything official, and travel patiently.
    After
Take care. The UK government says crime ranges from petty theft and mugging to carjacking and armed robbery, with greater risk after dark in remote parts of Malabo and Bata. Police and military roadblocks are common, with regular reports of requests for bribes, and photographing government or military buildings or airports is illegal. Keep your papers on you and travel patiently.

    US row: when to apply

    Before
Apply at least 60 days before travel.
    After
A visa is required. Equatorial Guinea cancelled visa-free travel for US passport holders on 24 April 2023, and its Embassy in Washington states that all visitors with a foreign passport must present a valid visa. An older government information page still describes the exemption; we follow the Embassy, since travelling without a visa risks being refused boarding or entry. The US Embassy in Malabo says to apply at least 60 days before travel, and the Embassy of Equatorial Guinea says a visa must be used within 60 days of issuance, so time the application with both in mind.
  22. El Salvador

    Passport validity

    Before
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months on arrival. The rule airlines apply, even though some visa-exempt visitors are admitted with less.
    After
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

  24. Egypt

    safety text

    Before
Main tourist areas (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Nile Valley and Red Sea resorts) are heavily policed and generally safe for visitors, but avoid the North Sinai governorate and the Western Desert near the Libyan border, and expect security checkpoints when traveling between cities.
    After
The UK advises against all travel to North Sinai and to within 20 km of the Libyan border, and against all but essential travel to most of the Western Desert, northern South Sinai beyond the St Catherine–Nuweiba road, Ismailiyah east of the Suez Canal and the Hala'ib Triangle. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Nile Valley and the Red Sea coast lie outside these areas. Expect security checkpoints when traveling between cities.
  25. Egypt

    onward ticket text

    Before
Onward travel is not systematically checked at the border, but airlines and the eVisa application may ask for return or onward ticket details and accommodation information.
    After
The eVisa portal lists a travel itinerary and hotel bookings or details of the places you will visit among the documents to show on arrival. It does not say a return or onward ticket is required, but airlines may ask for one.
